It’s really saddening that people don’t consider safety and protection while charging their devices. Some small mistakes occur repeatedly, which can cause serious technological issues or reduce the lifespan of your devices.
The cost of most of these devices is expensive; looking after them will save you from spending unnecessarily.
Here are some things to avoid while charging your devices and how you can increase their lifespan.
1. Avoid Using Damaged Cables
Do not try to use a frayed or damaged charging cable to power your devices. It is advisable to replace and discard damaged cables/cords immediately you notice signs of breakage.
Damaged cables can cause electrical shock or electrical fire. Do ensure to replace them once noticed.
2. Do Not Overload Sockets or Outlets
While it may seem good using one socket or outlet to power all your devices, it is highly dangerous because overloading can cause overheating, which may lead to fire hazards.
It is advisable to use multiple sockets or outlets to charge lots of devices. Sometimes you can assign particular sockets for specific devices or electrical loads.
3. Don’t Charge Your Devices Overnight
While it may be a nice idea to charge devices that are extremely low overnight, it is advisable not to make it a habit.
Plugging your devices overnight will turn off the charge when it’s full, but it puts the battery into constant heat, which can reduce the lifespan of the battery or reduce its performance.
4. Don’t Ignore Overheating Signals
Sometimes, your device might be extremely hot—this is a sign of overheating or a wiring incompatibility. It is advisable to unplug immediately.
Do not ignore any signs of overheating. It may not cause fire hazard, but it can damage your device. Play safe.
5. Avoid Extension Sockets
After making research, I got to know that extension sockets shouldn’t be used often to charge devices because they are meant to be used temporarily, not permanently.
Using extension sockets all the time for your devices can cause overheating, and depending on the extension type, it can cause fire hazards.
The best socket to use for charging is the ready-made wall socket.
6. Do Not Charge Your Devices on Beds and Sofas
While lying on the bed, it is strongly not advisable to lay your device or charger within your blankets or bedsheet. This is because devices laid within fabrics can cause overheating, which can lead to injury.
Please note that charging generates heat. Fabrics or other soft surfaces may prevent airflow which can cause the heat to build up and cause hazards or injuries. It is best to place your devices on flat surfaces when charging.
7. Do Not Use Low-Quality Cables
Avoid low-quality, brand-less cables or cables not directly from the manufacturer. They can cause overheating or unstable voltage.
It is best to use the charger that comes with the device or one recommended by the manufacturer.
